A series of renewable energy projects are proposed at Greenham that will allow the Business Park in time to become 100% renewable energy self-sufficient. Projects will include wind energy, photovoltaics (PV) and biomass energy ideas. |
A feasibility study examining the prospects for renewable energy at New Greenham Park and sponsored by the European Commission (ALTENER Programme), has recently been completed. This project has investigated the practicality and viability of a large business community switching to 100% renewable energy supply and becoming a 'flagship RES community'. The study concludes that there is more than enough potential from solar, wind and biomass to match the needs of the Park for the foreseeable
future.
This EC programme champions the 'Campaign for Take Off' which represents a crucial part of the Community's aim of working towards doubling the EU Renewable Energy Sources share by 2010 (from 6 to 12%). One important element of the Campaign is the initiative for the Integration of Renewable Energies in 100 Communities. This is concerned with encouraging the development of 100 community-based schemes which can reasonably aim at 100% power supply from renewable energy.
| Importance to the Thames Valley: |
This project would put the Thames Valley on the 'sustainability map' not only the UK but internationally too. To have one of the top 100 green communities recognised officially by the European Commission would boost local involvement and potentially attract more resources for replication activities.
Watch out for more events at the Business Park
in 2003 in conjunction with TV Energy. Also, for activities leading up to the development of solar, wind and biomass applications on-site.
A major food retailer (Sainsburys) is
likely to move to the site and is committed to introducing
geothermal/heat pumps and solar energy technology. The organisation will
also carry out biodiesel trials in conjunction with TV Energy.
Wind energy measurements on site indicate
a likely speed of between 6 and 6.5 metres per second. TV energy is
currently investigating whether this is technically sufficient for a
project. If it is then community consultations will be carried to check
on local acceptance.
