Surrey Looks Set to Develop Wood Fuel Supply
TV Bioenergy has recently
completed a study for Surrey County Council to assess the potential
woodfuel resource across the county, identify possible end markets and
highlight ways forward for Surrey in this area. The
executive summary of the report can be seen here.
Surrey Authorities Planning for Renewables
The
Surrey County 'Planning for Renewables' Seminar was held at Guildford on
the 10th February, 2005.
Following on from the
successful Planning for Renewables Seminars held in Oxon, Berks and
Bucks last autumn, an event was recently held for Surrey based officers
and councillors at Burchatts Farm Barn, Guildford. It was a great credit
to Surrey County Council, who handled invites to the event and also
chaired it very efficiently in the person of Danielle Byrne, Joint Head
of Service for Economic & Sustainable Resources. Over 70 people
attended, with representation from all but one of the Surrey local
authorities.
This event differed slightly
from those previously held for the other counties (see report below), in
that the results of a study into the biomass potential of Surrey were
also presented, along with a case study of the leading work already
undertaken by Woking. A presentation was also delivered on the potential
impacts of the Surrey County Council policy requiring a 10% on-site
renewable energy generation capability on certain types and sizes of
development. This included the case of a development currently being
undertaken in the Mole Valley area.
The 'question and answer'
session proved lively as ever, but given that Surrey is slightly more
advanced in a number of planning for renewables areas, the questions
were well focused and largely centred round how the local planning
authorities would deliver the policy emanating from the County. Cllr
David Davis, Vice Chair of Surrey CC and Executive Portfolio Holder for
Environment then gave an excellent speech to round off the evening.
The event was very enjoyable
and hopefully of benefit to all that attended and thanks is given to
Surrey County Council and the Surrey Local Government Association for
all their help with the planning and operation of the event.

Local Authority Renewables League Table created and Planning Guide
launched
On behalf of partners and the SE
Sustainable Energy partnership, TV Energy is testing methods of
producing individual Local Authority targets for renewable energy
generation.
A discussion paper, 'Local
Authority Performance Comparison: Thames Valley & Surrey', has been
produced which includes 'league tables' of our local authorities,
according to predicted percentage achievement of their targets by 2010.
It can be downloaded from our publications
page.
The methodology was
discussed at the county-based workshops for councilors and planners in
the Thames Valley region throughout Autumn 2004. TV Energy will use it
to track progress alongside the SEE-STATS initiative.
TV Energy has also produced
a new guide for planners and planning committee members. The document,
'Renewable Energy Guidelines for Planning Authorities' can be downloaded
here.
